History Makers!
Manor New Technology High School’s Titan Regiment marching band was founded in August 2019 by Director of Bands, Christopher Thomsen and Percussion Director, Brandon Baker and currently has a total of 65 band members. The Titans competed in the Region 18 University Interscholastic League (UIL) District Competition on Saturday, October 16, 2021.
Under the direction of senior drum major Saul Flores and junior drum major William Webb, the Titans have been famed as the first band in MNTHS history to receive a sweepstake of Division 1 Superior ratings with their performance titled “6 Feet...Together.”
“This is our year!” explains London Pennick, a freshman band member at MNTHS. “This is the year we show everyone that we are a force to be reckoned with.”
“And we did exactly that!” says Christina Miller, a senior band member at MNTHS.
“I” Rating
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) promotes teamwork, leadership, and pride through educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests. Participation in UIL competitions allows scholars to experience setting goals, working as a team, and high-level competition.
Marching bands are judged by a panel of judges who individually rate the band as 1: Superior, 2: Excellent, 3: Good, 4: Fair, or 5: Poor.
The Titans stole the show with their performance of “6 Feet...Together” and took the judges by straight sweepstakes! The panel unanimously voted to award the Titan Regiment band with a Division 1 Superior rating!
“There is no better emotion than what I felt when we found out we received a Division 1 rating. I looked around and saw my teammates and directors cheering with tears in their eyes and it was an incredible feeling,” explains Pennick.
“6 Feet...Together”
The Titan’s musical showcase is broken up into three movements, or sections, that take you through the highs and lows of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dialogue can be heard over a loudspeaker as the narrator introduces each movement.
“Disconnected”
The first movement represents the start of the pandemic when we all felt lost and unsure of the fate of our world. The Color Guard rips their flags through the air in sporadic spinning motions.
“Tormented”
The second movement is full of loud and powerful music to represent the anger and overwhelming feelings most of us felt during the isolation of the pandemic. Red flags with aggressive movements help the audience feel the power behind the band’s message.
“Unmuted”
The final movement leaves the audience feeling uplifted and hopeful as the dialogue reminds us that unity is our best defense against these challenging times. Rainbow flags slowly and smoothly drift through the air.
“We did not even get to march last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Being away from our instruments for a year proved to be a challenge,” explains Malachi Mathis, a junior band member at MNTHS.
“But as a group, we put in the blood, sweat, tears, and sunburns to achieve this Superior 1 rating,” says Pennick.
Mathis chimes in, “and we have the tan lines to prove it!”
Preparation for “6 Feet...Together” started in July 2021, in the thick of that dreadful Texas heat. Determined and passionate band members preserved through relentless hours of perfecting their show.
“Our show is very powerful and emotional,” says Miller, “It’s an amazing feeling to know that we created something that people relate to on a personal level.”
The Next Round
The Titan Regiment Band will compete in Pflugerville, Texas on October 30, 2021, against 30 other school districts within a 400-mile radius at the Area D UIL competition.

¡Creadores de historia!
Titan Regiment (El Regimiento Titan) de Manor New Technology High School fue fundado en agosto de 2019 por el director de bandas, Christopher Thomsen, y el director de percusión, Brandon Baker, y actualmente cuenta con un total de 65 miembros de banda. Los Titanes compitieron en la Competencia de Distrito de la Liga Interescolar Universitaria (UIL) de la Región 18 el sábado, 16 de octubre de 2021.
Bajo la dirección del líder estudiantil de la banda, Saul Flores en grado 12 y el líder estudiantil William Webb en grado 11, los Titanes han sido famosos como la primera banda en la historia de MNTHS en recibir un sorteo de calificaciones de División 1 Superior con su actuación titulada "6 Feet ...Together” (Seis Pies… Juntos).
"¡Este es nuestro año!" explica London Pennick, miembro de la banda de primer año de MNTHS. "Este es el año en que les mostramos a todos que somos una fuerza a tener en cuenta."
"¡E hicimos exactamente eso!" dice Christina Miller, miembro de grado 12 de la banda de MNTHS.
Clasificación "I"
La Liga Interescolar Universitaria (UIL) promueve el trabajo en equipo, el liderazgo y el orgullo a través de concursos educativos, académicos, deportivos y musicales extracurriculares. La participación en las competencias de UIL permite a los estudiantes experimentar el establecimiento de metas, el trabajo en equipo y la competencia de alto nivel.
Las bandas de marcha son juzgadas por un panel de jueces que individualmente califican a la banda como 1: Superior, 2: Excelente, 3: Bueno, 4: Regular, o 5: Deficiente.
¡Los Titanes se robaron el show con su interpretación de “6 Feet...Together” y eso los llevo directamente a nivel de Sweepstakes por recibir 1 de todos los jueces! ¡El panel votó unánimemente para otorgar a la banda!
“No hay mejor emoción que la que sentí cuando nos enteramos de que recibimos una calificación de División 1. Miré a mi alrededor y vi a mis compañeros de equipo y directores celebrando con lágrimas en los ojos y fue una sensación increíble,” explica Pennick.
"6 pies...juntos"
El escaparate musical de la banda de los Titánes se divide en tres movimientos, o secciones, que lo llevan a través de los altibajos de la pandemia de COVID-19. El diálogo se puede escuchar por un altavoz mientras el narrador presenta cada movimiento.
"Desconectado"
El primer movimiento representa el comienzo de la pandemia cuando todos nos sentimos perdidos e inseguros del destino de nuestro mundo. Los miembros da la banda con las banderas rasgan sus banderas por el aire con movimientos giratorios esporádicos.
"Atormentado"
El segundo movimiento está lleno de música fuerte y poderosa para representar la ira y los sentimientos abrumadores que la mayoría de nosotros sentimos durante el aislamiento de la pandemia. Las banderas rojas con movimientos agresivos ayudan a la audiencia a sentir el poder detrás del mensaje de la banda.
"No silenciado"
El movimiento final deja a la audiencia sintiéndose animada y esperanzada mientras el diálogo nos recuerda que la unidad es nuestra mejor defensa contra estos tiempos desafiantes. Las banderas del arcoiris flotan lenta y suavemente por el aire.
“Ni siquiera pudimos marchar el año pasado por la pandemia de COVID-19. Estar lejos de nuestros instrumentos durante un año resultó ser un desafío,” explica Malachi Mathis, miembro de la banda de MNTHS en grado 11.
“Pero como grupo, inyectamos sangre, sudor, lágrimas y quemaduras solares para lograr esta calificación Superior 1,” dice Pennick.
Mathis interviene, "¡y tenemos las líneas de bronceado para demostrarlo!"
La preparación para “6 Feet ... Together” comenzó en julio de 2021, en medio del terrible calor de Texas. Miembros de la banda decididos y apasionados conservados a través de incansables horas de perfeccionamiento de su espectáculo.
“Nuestro programa es muy poderoso y emotivo,” dice Miller, “Es una sensación increíble saber que creamos algo con lo que la gente se relaciona a nivel personal.”

La banda Titan Regiment competirá en Pflugerville, Texas, el 30 de octubre de 2021, contra otros 30 distritos escolares dentro de un radio de 400 millas en la competencia del Área D UIL.
