Manor ISD Board Appoints LaKesha Small to Place 2 Trustee Position

The Manor ISD Board of Trustees has appointed LaKesha Small to serve in the Place 2 trustee position, filling the seat following the passing of beloved educator and board member Dr. Mary Thomas. Small will serve the remainder of Dr. Thomas’ term, which will end in November 2026.
A long-time Manor resident, respected community leader, and advocate for public education, Small brings more than 20 years of executive leadership experience in the semiconductor industry, along with a deep, personal commitment to the students and families of Manor ISD.
Small has built her career leading complex engineering and manufacturing operations with global companies such as AMD and Intel. With a degree in Engineering Technology she has overseen large teams, multimillion-dollar budgets, and high-level operational systems. Her professional background includes managing more than $12 million in operational budgets and working in environments responsible for over $400 million in capital assets, demonstrating a strong foundation in fiscal responsibility and strategic leadership.
In addition to her professional experience, Small has been actively involved in the Manor community for more than a decade. She has served as PTA Treasurer at Manor High School, supported the Manor Schoolhouse Foundation, and most recently served as Chair of the City of Manor Planning and Zoning Commission, where she worked alongside city leaders and residents to support thoughtful growth and development.
Her connection to Manor ISD is not only professional and civic, but deeply personal. Nearly two years ago, Small stepped into a leading role supporting her sister’s four children following her sister’s passing. Today, three of those students attend Manor ISD schools, with one having graduated in 2023. That experience has further strengthened her commitment to ensuring every student has access to opportunity and support.
“LaKesha Small brings a unique combination of professional expertise, community leadership, and a genuine passion for students,” said Board President Ana Cortez. “Her experience in managing complex systems and budgets, along with her deep roots in Manor, make her a strong addition to the Board as we continue our work to serve students and families.”
Raised in a family that valued education, Small has long believed in the power of public education as both an equalizer and a promise. Her decision to serve is grounded in a desire to ensure strong governance, responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources, and a continued focus on student outcomes.
“As I step into this role, I do so with a deep respect for the legacy of Dr. Mary Thomas and the impact she made on our students and community,” said Small. “I am committed to continuing that work by focusing on strong schools, supporting our educators, and making sure every student in Manor ISD has the opportunity to succeed.”
Small will officially begin her service after being sworn in April.
