A Manor ISD Board of Trustee received a special recognition for his service to the community.
Johnny Velasco received an award from the Travis County Justice Planning Workforce Development Task Force this week. The task force is a re-entry program to help ex-offenders find and maintain employment. Mr. Velasco provided services to some of the local businesses in Austin and Travis County that hired several people that went through the program in hopes of a second chance in improving their lives and the lives of their families.
"I am a huge supporter and advocate for those second chances," Mr. Velasco said. "I was really touched by some of the stories these individuals that were incarcerated told me. Now they are making differences not only in their own lives, but in our society as a whole."
Ex-offenders are first required to attend an orientation. Those willing to sign up are then assessed based on their aptitude and skills before being referred to employers seeking those types of skilled employees. Participants not ready for employment are referred to local service agencies in hopes of getting the needed skills to participate in the Workforce Development Services program.
