Breakthrough Central Texas teamed up with Samsung engineers Thursday June 29 to help Manor ISD students learn about the impact engineering can have with the Egg Drop Challenge.
The challenge was to drop an egg from the top of the staircase at Manor Middle School and have it land without breaking—twice. To accomplish this goal, the Samsung Engineers helped the students in small teams to craft a contraption that would absorb the impact of the fall. The teams had materials such as balloons, newspaper, cottonballs, and pipe cleaners to work with.
Teams worked for more than an hour on their egg drop containers before letting them fly off the stairwell at Manor Middle. Eggs that survived the first fall had to go down a second flight of stairs before the contraption was considered a success.
Breakthrough Central Texas provides extended learning, comprehensive advising, and leadership experiences from middle school through college to students in low-income communities who will be the first in their families to graduate from college, according to the website.
Thank you Samsung and Breakthrough for this STEM-based summer lesson for Manor ISD students.
