The MISD Career & Technical Education department is now accepting students for the new Veterinary Assistant program to be located at the brand new Manor Senior High School starting in the 2018-19 school year. An information session for interested students and families will be held February 20th at 5:30 pm at the MHS Ag shop classroom.
This is a two-year program (11th and 12th grade) that will prepare students to earn a Veterinary Assistant certification. Veterinary Assistants work alongside Veterinarians, performing many daily tasks, such as feeding, weighing, and taking the temperature of animals. Other routine duties may include administering medication or providing nursing care before and after surgery and other medical procedures.
Graduates of this program can begin work right out of high school as a Veterinary Assistant earning up to $25,000 per year. They will also be prepared to go on to continue their education in the field of veterinary medicine earning an Associate’s Degree as a Licensed
Veterinary Technician or an advanced degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Veterinarians have the potential to earn a salary up to or exceeding $100,000 per year.
Eligible students will:
● Be on track to successfully complete Small Animal Management OR Health Science by the
end of the 2017-18 school year
● Be an 11th grader at Manor Senior High School for the 2018-19 school year
● Be able to dedicate 3 credits to the program in both the 11th grade and 12th grade years
Enrollment is limited and consideration will be given to students who have a
grade of 80 or higher for their prerequisite courses and students who have an
excellent attendance record.
