Our class structures curriculum around the TEKS objectives. Some examples for third grade are:
- READING:
The student uses a variety of word identification strategies;
reads with fluency and understanding in texts at appropriate levels;
reads widely for different purposes in varied sources; uses a variety
of strategies to comprehend selections read aloud & selections read
independently; responds to various texts; analyzes the characteristics
of various types of texts; generates questions and conducts research
using information from various sources.
- READING & WRITING:
The student listens and speaks to gain knowledge of his/her own
culture, the culture of others and the common elements of culture;
communicates clearly by putting thoughts and feelings into spoken
words; writes for a variety of audiences and purposes, and in various
forms; composes original texts using the conventions of written
language such as capitalization, etc.; spells proficiently; composes
meaningful texts applying knowledge of grammar & usage; selects
& uses writing processes for self-initiated & assigned writing;
evaluates his/her own writing and that of others.
- MATH:
The student uses place value to communicate about increasingly large
numbers in verbal and written form, including money; uses fraction
names & symbols to describe fractional parts of whole objects or
sets of objects; adds & subtracts to solve meaningful problems
involving whole numbers; recognizes and solves problems using
multiplication & division; uses patterns to solve problems; uses
formal geometric vocabulary; recognizes congruence & symmetry;
recognizes that numbers can be represented by points on a line; selects
& uses appropriate units & procedures to measure length &
area; solves problems by collecting, organizing, displaying &
interpreting sets of data.
- SCIENCE:
The student knows that information, critical thinking, & scientific
problem solving are used in making decisions; knows that systems exist
in the world; that forces cause change; knows that matter has physical
properties & that living organisms need food, water, light and air;
that species have different adaptations that help them survive and
reproduce in their enviornment; knows that the natural world includes
earth materials and objects in the sky.
- SOCIAL STUDIES:
The student understands how individuals, events & ideas have
influenced the history of various communities; understands the common
characteristics of these and present communities; the concepts of
location, distance & direction on maps and globes; understands the
basic structures and functions of local government; ethnic and cultural
celebrations of the U.S. and other nations; the role of mythical heroes
in shaping the culture of communities, states and nations; also
understands how individuals have created new technology and affected
life in communities around the world; and applies critical-thinking
skills to organize and use information acquired from a variety of
sources including electronic technology.
- HEALTH:
The student explains ways to enhance & maintain health throughout
the life span; recognizes and performs behaviors that reduce health
risks throughout the life span; knows and engages in behaviors that
prevent disease and speed recovery from illness and names structures
and functions of the human body and explains how they relate to
personal health throughout the life span.
Not part of TEKS, but
part of my classroom, my objectives include teaching students awareness
of tolerance and diversity, how to be kind and compassionate to all
human beings, and to do "all the good you can, in all the ways you can,
everyday that you can."
Some activities that encompass our objectives are:
Growing plants from germinated seeds
Reading about Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ruby Bridges
Creating models of the solar system and its planets
Writing fantasy stories and poems
Writing personal narratives
Learning vocabulary words and spelling them and using them in our everyday conversations
