Two OME Teachers Awarded Grants by A+ Education Foundation

Two teachers from Oak Meadows Elementary School were awarded special grants for their hard work last school year.

Ronald Cintron and Valerie Barnes were recipients of the 2017 Kate Loftis Memorial Education Grant, awarded on behalf of the A+ Education Foundation. The grant is given to educators in Central Texas to help fund innovative, inspiring, and engaging programs in their schools.

Each grant is $1,000. Cintron and Barnes are two of 92 area educators picked for the grant. The two applied through A+ Federal Credit Union and tribute their student's success to blending learning at OME.

"I wanted to bring that enthusiasm to all of the students at Oak Meadows," said Cintron, a 3rd Grade Teacher. "My motivation was simple: I know students with a growth mindset will prosper, but with the iPads we will receive, it is a bit more fun."

This year's winning submissions include:

*Creating an innovation lab with robotics, technology, programming, and engineering for elementary school students
*Developing a Makerspace- a collaborative space for students to enrich learning with tools and equipment for school projects
*Implementing a coding program for first graders
*Building green spaces throughout the school to help students improve attention and working memory
*Providing 3-D virtual reality devices for students to take virtual field trips
*Installing a Little Free Library on campus for students and community members to use
*Providing parent coaching to parents of children with autism
*Students refurbishing retired/donated computers to give to students who do not have access to computers at home

The A+ Education Foundation gave out a total of $85,000 in grants, which began in 2005.
